Mars’ suggestion of trying to force a connection using the adapter settings should help you eliminate some of the possible problems, and if it works when forced totry using a different cable.

For what it’s lo, shielded cable is not a requirement for gigabit ethernet – CAT5e is adequate for most installations, yours appears to residential, so unless you have an unusual residence with high levels of RF, I would stick with the CAT5e. One question – are you making your own cables? I use Debian rather than Mandrake, so I can’t help you with how that’s done.
